Melodic and heartfelt, Austin surprises at nearly every turn, whether that's by an unexpected sonic detour or the simple fact that Post Malone has never sounded this fearless.

The shift from trap beats and hip-hop delivery to purer pop suites Malone well, proving that slowing down can be a creative advantage, especially when you’re heading in the right direction.

It sounds like sobering stuff on paper. But on record, a lot of these songs play out as breezily as Styles’ “As It Was.” It’s a record that’s in constant conflict with itself, using candor and humor as a self-conscious form of denial, maybe; the easygoing infectiousness of the music always is reassuring us that there’s nothing to worry about amid all this conspicuous consumption.

Almost every track finds Post in some tortured posture like this, singing cheerily into a bottle he’s doomed to finish. They’re largely fine songs, and clever, but lighter than Post seems to want them to be.

Although always listenable, Austin soon gets tired and whiny.

For some reason—fear of boring his fans, obedience to the preferences of the streaming services, a career focused on club bangers—Malone won’t let these songs breathe. The result is an album that’s overstuffed and undercooked.

Yes, Malone is still able to whip out some sticky refrains, but the songs here all follow the same overly simplistic pop structure, to the point that their catchiness is less an affirmation of his songwriting talents and more of an inevitability of pop formula.

I'll give this album a solid 9. As a Post Malone fan since pre-Stoney, I'll have to admit this album may not be for the casual posty fan. ThisI'll give this album a solid 9. As a Post Malone fan since pre-Stoney, I'll have to admit this album may not be for the casual posty fan. This takes a venture off the edgy and melodic "rap" genre and focuses on a collection of radio-friendly songs. This album will most likely have more longevity than the debut numbers may appear to show. My personal favorites are "Sign Me Up" and "Laugh it Off"… Expand

Now I realize he is kind of another pop artist that tries to be cool in the same music industry we already have a lot of. And I hope this doesn't sound too harsh, but he actually sounds exactly like Ed Sheeran, but he actually tries to take it a step further. So, yes, inside all of this there is nothing more than a fleeting pop that most likely will disappears and be forgotten when another Post Malone appears and appeals to the younger generations of united states.
I didn't like the way he merges some genres in here, but he sings nice, and his lyrics are generic for obvious reasons. Nothing new, but friendly enough to be something enough for enough time for him to claim his 15 something of fame.… Expand-
