The Complete Guide to Dog Friendly Beaches in Pensacola (2)

Just like their human counterparts, the family pet must follow dog beach rules. We’re incredibly thrilled to have great dog beaches in Pensacola Beach. To keep Pensacola Beach dog beaches available to the public, responsible pet owners should follow these typical rules.

  • Stay off the dunes
  • Clean up after your dog
  • Dogs must be on leash at all times
  • Supervise your dog
  • No aggressive dogs
  • Collar and ID tags must be kept on your dog at all times
  • A current rabies tag must be visible on all dogs at the dog beach
  • Up-to-date vaccinations
  • No females in heat
  • No puppies under 4 months old
  • The owner of a dog may face criminal charges if a dog or pet is found left unattended in a vehicle

Tips for Taking your Dog to the Beach

If your family pet is unaccustomed to going to the beach, there are some dangers you may want to protect your pet from. First, there isn’t any shade at the beach, and your dog is covered in fur. It’s important to keep your dog cool during the trip. Like humans, dogs can suffer from heat-related illnesses. Also, be aware of sea creatures, such as jelly fish, that can sting your dog. Lastly, even if your dog is a great swimmer, they can also tire and become victims to ocean currents.

Bring Water and Treats

Water for your dog is very important, and if you have a very active dog I recommend to bring at least 2 gallons if you’re staying there for an extended period of time. Treats (or food) should also be brought, unless you want to make an unscheduled trip to a nearby store to purchase food for fur-babies.

Dog Safety at The Beach

Swimming Safety

The Complete Guide to Dog Friendly Beaches in Pensacola (3)Dog life jackets should be used as a safety precaution if your dog cannot swim or is not a strong swimmer. While dog friendly beaches in Pensacola have many upsides, they often have strong tides, called rip tides, that can tire out and drown even the best swimmers. I personally recommend the dog life jacket shown below because it comes in 5 different sizes, 10+ colors, and has a high ranking by those who have purchased it. I bought one for our Lab, Lucy.

Beware of Jellyfish and Other Marine Life

Moreover, be mindful of dangerous marine life like jellyfish. If you confirm your dog has been stung by a jellyfish, call your veterinarian (or a local vet) so they can determine if your pup should be brought in for medical care. If you can, capture the jellyfish in a small bag (be careful not to get stung yourself!).

What should you do if your pup gets stung?

    • Flush the area with white vinegar. This prevents stingers from releasing more toxins into their systems. Continue flushing until the dog is pain-free.
    • Don’t scrape away the stingers. If you do this, it may cause more toxins to be released into their systems.
    • Remove stingers with a pair of tweezers. Be sure to wear gloves to avoid being stung yourself.
    • Once stingers are removed, apply heat to the area. A cold compress will make things worse.
    • Don’t urinate or use other home remedies on the infected area.

    Heat Illnesses

You can bring a beach umbrella or small tent to shade your family pet. Finally, it may sound strange, but put sunscreen on your dog. Just like humans, dogs can get sunburned. I personally recommend the sunscreen below, it does notcontains zinc because it can be toxic to dogs if ingested, and is fragrance free. Finally, salt water can be irritating to dogs, so a fresh-water rinse before leaving the beach will help alleviate this irritation. A doggy shower will also help keep his skin and coat healthy.

We hope you had an amazing stay while visiting dog friendly Beach Pensacola! Please leave a comment about the Pensacola Beach dog beaches you visited and any positive or negative experiences you and your furry friend endured. If there are other beaches that you’ve discovered that are pet friendly, we urge you to contact us so that we can include them in a future post.
