Is one coat of Sherwin-Williams paint enough? ›

We've all heard paint manufacturers claim “one coat coverage” but is it really true? As a rule of thumb, you should always expect to apply two coats of paint regardless of what the label says. Colors such as reds, bright yellows, and oranges may require three or more coats.

Sherwin-Williams paint is thick because it uses more solids, which makes it easier to work with and will cover more surface area. Furthermore, most surfaces can be completely covered in one to two coats. Painting contractors aim to please because their reputation is on the line with every painting project.

On average, you can get about 400 square feet out of one gallon of paint. For an easy perspective, one gallon would likely cover a bathroom or small bedroom. But keep in mind that most rooms require more than one coat of paint. So if your room needs 2 coats, plan on getting around 200 square feet out of a gallon.

Paint Second Coat

Let your first coat dry for at least four hours, then apply a second coat in the same manner.

Here's how it works: You bring the item you wish to match – a color chip, rug, pillow, carpet sample, etc., – to any Sherwin-Williams store. Just make sure it's at least the size of a dime and has a consistent color and finish – nothing porous, mirrored or high-gloss.

You might be tempted to leave it at one coat, especially with paler colours, because the coverage is so good. But don't - paint cures and hardens as it dries, so two coats will ultimately give you the most durable finish in the end.

You'll rarely get a seamless finish from just one coat of paint, and even if you do, coverage isn't the only goal when it comes to painting a room. You also want to prepare your walls for the coming years of wear and tear, cleaning, wiping and sunlight – in short, you want the paint to be durable.

One-coat paint is not guaranteed to be one coat, even in favorable conditions. Manufacturers' one-coat paint guarantees often exclude repaired surfaces, porous surfaces, surfaces that have previously been uncoated, surfaces that contain tannins (such as cedar), and surfaces with aggressive stains.

With two coats of paint, you increase overall durability and color coverage, reduce the possibility that paint underneath will bleed through, and provide greater protection for the painted surface… In short, it will look better and last longer.
